This page documents the Backcountry Signal SMS opt-in workflow and disclosures for carrier and provider review.

1. Exact Opt-In Language (Website)

2. Opt-In Workflow

  1. The user visits https://backcountrysignal.com.
  2. The user creates an account, enters a mobile number, and checks the unchecked SMS consent checkbox.
  3. Backcountry Signal sends a six-digit verification code to the entered mobile number.
  4. The user enters the code on the website to verify the mobile number.
  5. Once verified, the user can text Backcountry Signal and receive user-requested outdoor-guidance responses and occasional account-related notices.
  6. The user can reply STOP at any time to unsubscribe or HELP for assistance.

3. Sample Messages

These samples are rendered from the exact message templates the application sends in production.

Verification code (example code shown):

"Backcountry Signal: Your verification code is 482731. Enter it at backcountrysignal.com to verify your number. Msg & data rates may apply, message frequency varies. Reply STOP to opt out or HELP for help."

Welcome after verification:

"Backcountry Signal: You're confirmed! Text your question anytime - try: What is the weather on Mount Elbert this weekend? Reply EXAMPLES for more, COMMANDS for what you can text. Msg freq varies. Msg and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to cancel, HELP for help."

HELP message:

"Backcountry Signal: Text a question in plain words - weather, fire, avalanche, water, first aid. Reply COMMANDS or EXAMPLES for more. Not an emergency service. Support: support@backcountrysignal.com. Reply STOP to opt out."

STOP confirmation:

"Backcountry Signal: You have been unsubscribed and will receive no further messages. Reply START to opt back in."

Opt back in (START):

"Backcountry Signal: You're opted back in and will receive messages again. Text any backcountry question anytime. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help."
