What is a credit?
A credit is one answered question. You send a question by SMS, and one credit is used when Backcountry Signal sends a useful reply.
What happens if I run out?
You can add extra credits anytime. If you're on a monthly or annual plan, top-ups give you more room for longer trips.
What phone do I need?
Any device that can send and receive SMS text messages — smartphones, basic phones, and satellite messengers. If it can text, it works with Backcountry Signal.
Does my phone have satellite texting?
Many recent phones can text over satellite with no extra gear. iPhone 14 and later have satellite messaging built in. On Android, Google Pixel 9 and later and newer Samsung Galaxy models (S25 and later) support it through carriers like Verizon, and T-Mobile's T-Satellite service works with most recent phones on any carrier. You'll need to be outside with a clear view of the sky.
Does it work with my satellite messenger?
Yes. Backcountry Signal works with any satellite messenger that supports two-way text messaging, including Garmin inReach, ZOLEO, and SPOT X. Just text our number and the reply comes back through your device.
How does it work with no cell service?
Satellite texting relays your message through satellites instead of cell towers. Backcountry Signal receives it just like a regular text and replies the same way — no app, Wi-Fi, or data connection needed.
Is this an emergency service?
No. Backcountry Signal is decision support, not rescue. If you can call 911 or trigger satellite SOS in an emergency, do that first. Use Backcountry Signal for practical next steps and guidance.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Monthly plans can be canceled anytime, and you can text STOP to stop SMS messages.
Do credits expire?
Plan credits renew based on your plan. Extra credit packs are designed for occasional use and stay available for future trips unless account terms say otherwise.
Backcountry Signal is not a replacement for 911, a PLB, satellite SOS, professional medical care, or your own judgment. It provides practical guidance by text when your device can send a message.
